In regards to the last post, which discussed time issues, I wanted to share a concept/practice idea I have been working on myself and with some of my students over the last week. It works in this way: Play a groove to a click for four bars and then have the click drop out for four bars, having the loop of eight bars start back at the beginning. The main goal is to have whatever groove you are playing land back on the one. Once you are comfortable with playing through four bars without a click, play through eight, then twelve, etc. Use this method with a variety of grooves and tempos…generally the slower the metronome setting, the more difficult it is to keep perfect time….lots of space!
I think you will find this exercise very helpful in building concentration, focus, and most importantly improving your time, which I know I can always use!
Until next time, keep it grooving….
