A funny story: I recently had to learn a Neil Young song (Harvest Moon) for an upcoming wedding I am playing. It is a great song, and since the drum part is played with brushes, I was excited about nailing the part exactly as it was recorded, b/c as of late I have really been trying to get my brush technique together, whether it be in a rock setting, jazz, Latin, etc….so anyway….
I could not seem to get what was happening on the record. The sweep (which I assumed was being played on the left hand in typical fashion) I was hearing was not jiving with the right hand pattern, and it was driving me crazy. I was determined to figure out what was being played so decided to see if I could find a clip on Youtube of the song being performed live. This is what I found:
Go Figure!
Another example of things not being what they seem!
Until next time, get those brush (or broom) chops together
So That’s What it Is!
